So, not a permissions issue, not a problem with the code, all the files got copied, and it works on every user account but mine. To complicate things further, we tried playing the game on my sister's limited account without a CD, and it worked there too. Except we decided to make my account an administrator too so I could play the game, and when I tried to run it, it gave me the same "Insert CD" message. Of course it's accessible from every account, so I tried it on the administrator and it worked without the CD. Then I got it in my head that it was somehow a permissions issue, since it's loaded on a limited user account. If it did, enjoy the game!Īlright, so I kept messing around and trying different things, playing with the values of the variables in the GAME.ini file, but nothing helped. Which ever one you prefer you may play on! :) I really hope this helped.

Your game should work fine on the monitor and your laptop. Once you have the screen displaying on both screens, click your link to run "Creature of Kapu Cave" or "Danger by Design" (As these are the only games seeming to have this issue).

If it is, try every option until the display shows up on both screens, the monitor, and the laptop. I am doing this on a Sony Vaio, It may be different on other computer brands. If it does, click the drop-down menu on "Display" and click the first option. As you already have the other monitor plugged in, it should detect the monitor. You may have to go to Control Panel, Appearance And Personalization, Display, Screen Resolution. Once you've done this, It may not work at first. This will allow you to see to screens (The monitor and the laptop). Another cable called the Monitor Y Cable (Upside-Down-Trapezoid Shaped) should come with your monitor and be plugged into the laptop. Just look for a big upside-down-trapezoid plug with tiny holes in it generally on the left side of your laptop. The screen does not compute the Nancy Drew game made for previous systems. I did a bit of studying and learned that this isn't a problem with the operating system, the laptop you use, or the way you obtain the game. I discovered a solution to this problem! I understand that not many of you have a spare monitor laying around, although. So, I need a way to disable it? Delete it from the folder? If someone has a suggestion/workaround/experience with this same problem, please reply. This look-for-cd default could be in a file by itself but is most likely somewhere in the code. My guess is that the game is wired to look for and operate from the the cd first, despite the facts that it now has the capability to run on the computer alone and I have a saved game somewhere in my folder. Now, when I try to play the game with the cd, it works but my saved game still isn't there. Then I exited, and the problem is I can't get back to my game because regardless of whether I use the shortcut on my desktop, TRTauto.exe in the folder, or game.exe in the folder, I get a message that tells me to insert the cd or exit the game.

I could access anything on the menu, navigate, talk to people nothing looked or sounded like there was a problem. I did all of this, and the game started up immediately.

When all the files have copied, start the installation from the folder, not the cd, and change the installation path so the game installs to that same folder (the default for older games creates a file outside of Program Files, which causes problems on Windows 7 computers). To do this, you copy all the files from the cd into a folder you create wherever you store your Nancy Drew games (for me, this was C:\Program Files (x86)\Nancy Drew\Treasure in the Royal Tower). I read on another post that it's possible to alter the installation process on the older games so they will run without the CD once they're installed.
